Dr. Wen

Brain Tumor Research
The Center for Neuro-Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, under the leadership of Director Patrick Wen, MD, has made important breakthroughs in cancer biology, drug design, and the care and treatment of patients with various cancers of the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Now, Dr. Wen and the Center’s Jan Drappatz, MD, Santosh Kesari, MD, PhD, and Andrew Norden, MD, seek to broaden our understanding of the molecular pathology of CNS cancers and bolster research with a robust clinical trial program in order to identify drugs that can target these diseases directly. Thanks to the support of the Tom E. Cosenzi Driving for the Cure Charity Golf Tournament, Dr. Wen’s tightly integrated program of clinical, laboratory, and translational research is changing the standard-of-care for CNS cancers, continuing to provide renewed hope for patients.

Overall Impact
Each year, over 20,000 individuals are diagnosed with primary cancers of the brain. The five-year survival rate for the most common and serious brain cancers such as glioblastomas is less than 10 percent. Even with a host of therapies involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, the prognosis for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma remains very poor, with most individuals only surviving for 10-14 months. Clearly, new avenues of treatment are needed.

The innovative studies and clinical trials led by Dr. Wen and his colleagues have greatly enhanced our ability to find a cure for CNS cancer patients while minimizing the effects of the harsh treatments and surgeries. This significant progress is directly due to the generosity provided through the Tom E. Cosenzi Driving for the Cure Charity Golf Tournament. Your support is allowing Dana-Farber to accelerate their pace of discovery while speeding the translation of these findings from the laboratory into clinical application. On behalf of the Center for Neuro-Oncology and all of those served by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we thank you for your continued dedication.
